I will not talk too much about our project content, suffice to say that it took many redos, editting the problem statement over and over again. Presentation wise, if I had to do it again, I would make minor edits to my slides. Some information which was not needed should have been omitted. I think I made the mistake of tailoring my speech to fit the slides rather than the slides to fit my speech. After all, the slides are merely an aid. Less informative slides would have been better. Otherwise, I should have highlighted the important terms in red to make them stand out better. Admittedly, there wasn't much time. Slides were still being editted the night before, and even the speech was constantly changing.
If I could, I would have slowed down the pace of my speech. The terrifying thing about presenting under a time limit is when you don't have any indication of how much time you have left. I think I ended up speaking faster than I should have had I known that there was still some time left.
As for nonverbals, as far as it goes, eye contact is important. Something all of us know, but none can actually pull off (with the exception of a select few). Also, perhaps standing nearer the class might have helped hold their focus. Also, I noticed that many presenters liked to present while standing behind a table/support of some kind. Perhaps it might make one feel less vulnerable, but at the same time it makes the presenter come across as less open. I'm not sure about this, what do you think?
After all is said and done, oral presentation, was, as usual, nervewrecking, and I hope never to do it again. Yet we all know that is wishful thinking.

Hey Aaron,
ReplyDeleteFrankly speaking, with all due respect to all other teams, including mine, I'd say your group had the best presentation. That is my honest neutral opinion, if I were to pick one. No offence to any other team of course.
My reasons? The slides were graphically attention capturing, the content was to the point, not too much of an information overload or the opposite. Your delivery was excellent, eye contact, intonation, engagement, hand gestures, etc, was above average to say the least. Transition between slides and presenters flowed smoothly.
The understanding between yourself and Jason during the presentation really seemed telepathic. Such depth shows how much effort yourself and the group had put in for the presentation. The parts you mentioned that can be improved (from above, the slides and the pace) really did not seem like there was much fault wih it at all.
Overall a job well done. congrats, really.

hi aaron,
ReplyDeleteI felt that you spoke pretty well with variations in your tone so it will no become dull and monotonous. It was definitely interesting to listen to your presentation. You have managed the non verbals well too. I've got not much comment to make but i do agree that standing behind something be it a table or chair will give the presenter some form for "protection" and be less vulnerable. Therefore it will somewhat help him be less nervous. I feel that it will sort of act as a barrier to communicate effectively with the audience as it may seem that you are a little defensive.
Cheers!
Hey Aaron!
ReplyDeleteFirstly, congrats on a job well done. I like your presentation despite having only 2 members I think you guys did really well. The effort of injecting effort into your presentation to grab audience's attention is great!
Since this is finally over, I have not much comment but I guess I agree with you that presenter whom stand behind table show sign of unconfidence and distant from audience.
Lastly, though it's impossible that we get to NOT do any more presentation, but I believe we can improve on our presentation skills :)
Cheers,
yongshen
Hey Aaron,
ReplyDeleteI find your group's presentation very well done. The slides were impressive and professional and the presenters managed to get my attention and I could smoothly follow through your entire presentation. GREAT JOB((:
As for your presentation, I like how you inject enthusiasm in your speech by varying your voice appropriately and how confident you looked. You have presented your idea clear enough as well. The only fault could be that you stood too far away from the audience but that alone isn't too big an issue and can be noted the next time round, should you have a presentation again. (Okay, definitely you will).
I do agree that standing behind a table or a support gives the presenter a sense of protection and could help ease nervousness alittle but that might project as being defensive, as andrew has mentioned.

Hey Aaron,
ReplyDeleteI just finished typing my comment for you and the browser hanged without posting my comment. =.='
I can't really remember what I wrote, but the gist of the comment was that you spoke in a clear and loud voice, and projected yourself in a real confident manner which I thought was really good. You maintained eye contact with every member of the audience too.
The fact that you stood from at the left of the audience and not behind any tables or such showed that you were very confident and prepared, and I applaud you for that. :)

Hi Aaron,
ReplyDeleteI think your efforts paid off! I would agree with the rest that your slides were definitely the closest any of us can get to corporate standards. Using red highlighting would have been a little too in your face. I also noticed you were practising various gestures before you started, and did actually use them during the presentation. I would say these made more effective emphases than red highlighting!
As far as I recall, you were pretty engaging. Congrats on that!

Hey all,
ReplyDeleteThanks for your kind comments. It is always appreciated :)
@audrey: your browser must have our patented smart filtering system, maybe you posted some vulgar/inflammatory material and that's why it hung =P
Ok, I'm kidding. But on a more serious note, I didn't pull a table to hide behind only because I was too lazy to. I think that if I had gone after another group, I would certainly also have hid behind a table =D
